Happy Birthday IE!

Microsoft's Internet Explorer turned 10 on Wednesday.
That's 10 years, not the version number, which is just now
approaching 7. While it's arguably the most important piece
of software to hit user desktops during the decade, its arrival
has been a mixed blessing. Some may consider it a curse.

Meet Gearlog

I've been telling you about my "secret project" for several
weeks. What we've done is create a blog that's an ongoing
series of short reviews of the best consumer electronics,
personal computers, digital entertainment, and other great
stuff that the editors here at Ziff Davis have run into.

The product is called Gearlog (www.gearlog.com) and
there are still some challenges to be worked out. If you
don't want to see our work-in-progress, I'll remind you
again in a few weeks. If you do visit Gearlog, please tell
me what you think and then come back and see what I'm
able to do with your feedback.

My job is to herd the project and write original items to
go with content from PC Magazine, ExtremeTech, and
LinuxDevices.com. I'll also be doing some Internet radio
(I won't use the "P"-word) you can download and help
Jim Louderback with his Digital Life TV show on
Tuesday nights.

I'm doing all this in addition to my work for eWEEK.com,
so this newsletter continues as is, though I will probably
slip a Gearlog item or two into each week's issue. That's
until I can start a Gearlog newsletter, which I think many
people will find more attractive than the RSS feeds we're
offering. But, you already know what I think about RSS.

GoogleTalk Is The Answer, But What Was The Question?

Another instant messaging system, just what the world doesn't
need. And now Google is giving us one. Forgive me if I contain
my enthusiasm, at least with Google Talk's initial release.

Most of the time I already have three IM clients--MSN,
Yahoo and AIM--open on my desktop. Are there people
who don't already have an IM account that Google can attract
to its new service? Can't be too many. Is there anything Google
can do to attract customers that its competitors can't also do?
Haven't seen it so far. Sure, Google can always draw on its
existing base, but it may be hard the convince people who
already feel overwhelmed by IM clients to join them.

Meanwhile, I have read a number of stories about Google Talk
and maybe I've missed it, but I haven't found an answer for my
biggest question: When does Google start parsing peoples' IM
conversations in order to present context-sensitive advertisements?

They're already parsing people's Gmail and generating
"appropriate" ads based upon the message's content. How
can Google possibly resist doing the same for instant
messaging?

Read the rest of David's column and tell us what you think.

Thanks for joining me again this week. Hope you'll take a look at
Gearlog and I'll look forward to being in your mailbox next Friday,
just ahead of the long Labor Day weekend. Is summer really over?
So soon?
