Got a question? Find the answer. Save the day
By Marilyn Cohodas, Editor in Chief

ITKE -- the acronym for our online community known as ITKnowledge
Exchange -- is getting an overhaul! If you are already a participant
in this innovative troubleshooting network, you may have noticed that
we have reorganized the main topics in our Question Archive and Ask A
Question filter. The goal is to make it easier and faster for you to
reach the right colleagues to help you solve specific technology

For those of you new to ITKE, let me bring you up to speed. ITKE is a
community of hundreds of IT professionals. You join by building a
profile and logging in. When you have a problem, you post a question.
Essentially you're creating a personal help desk comprised of a large
audience, a small audience or just that one particular person whose
skill set fits your needs. On the flip side, if you have an answer,
you can join the thread and apply your own knowledge to the issue at
hand to help someone else.

We're now in the process of beta testing ITKE.1, which means existing
members need to update their profiles to match up with appropriate
peers and technologies. To do that:
- Go to My Public Profile in the navigation bar
- Go to Edit Profile/Pref
- Update Areas of Experience

Check out the new ITKE beta. If you have suggestions for improvements
on categories or any other issues, e-mail me here:

Tightly integrated SQL Server and Visual Studio
By Robyn Lorusso, Site Editor

The new SQL Server 2005 will be tightly coupled with Visual Studio
2005, version 2.0, of the .NET framework. While we have yet to see
the implications that will ultimately come out of this product
integration, one concern is that, potentially, an update to one may
not directly align with an update to the other. Which product
versions will work together, and how difficult will it be to keep
both products running smoothly?

Do you think it will be easier or more difficult to migrate to both
products at once? Vote in our new poll here:,289141,sid87,00.html?track=NL-447&ad=526945

Then e-mail us your thoughts on this topic:

Extend network security to those roaming laptops
By Ben Vigil, Site Editor

Last week's malware infections highlighted the dangers of roaming
laptops. Many administrators considered their networks completely
secure and safe from Internet worms. Their mistake was in forgetting
that their secure LANs do not extend to the homes of the many
employees who carry their work and their laptops home with them.

This is one of those security problems that technology cannot easily
fix. There are technologies that help, like personal firewalls, but
the real key to a safe network is to educate your users and make them
part of the solution as well. Check out this tip on Windows XP SP2's
personal firewall here:,289483,sid45_gci1118952,00.html?track=NL-447&ad=526945
