Apple Does the 'Unthinkable'

[Keywords Matched: Intel IBM Dell]
Steven Jobs and Stephen Wozniak founded Apple Computer almost 30 years ago and it has been a staple of the personal computer arena over the decades -- since before the IBM-compatible PC or Wintel computer we know today. One reason that Apple has been able to gain faithful followers over the years is that its system architecture is a one-of-a-kind, namely its CPU (Motorola's 68000 and PowerPC chips by IBM and Motorola) and the operating system (Mac OS), which are uniquely associated with the Mac.

Where Have All the Lawsuits Gone?

[Keywords Matched: Linux Apple Windows Microsoft Java "Open source"]
Use open source, get sued. Or so we're told. It's pretty scary stuff. So, where are all the lawsuits? One of the most persistent FUD factors cited by the alarmists seeking to scare people away from open-source software is the specter of litigation. According to the dispensers of traditional wisdom, open source is rife with legal threats. If you were to believe even half of what you read on the subject, adopting open source is a legal risk equivalent to letting a fox in the hen house.

One of the big problems for complex companies is the ability, or
inability, to use expertise developed in one area in another. This is
one of the reasons complex companies like Sony often fail; they have all
of the disadvantages of that complexity and don't really get the
anticipated synergies that were generally used to justify the creation
of their complex structures.

endorsement by Microsoft is likely to push them into broader adoption.

CNET Weekend Hit List
July 16, 2005
Dear subscriber
Suzy Brannon, Associate editor, CNET.com
Suzy Brannon
Associate editor, CNET.com

I mentioned the other week that I had renegotiated my cell phone contract and was now in the market for a new phone. Well, I like to do my research (after all, my phone is my most-used gadget). And I can be a bit indecisive and, OK, a procrastinator, too. Needless to say, I haven't committed to a new phone yet. But I'm glad that I waited, because cell phone editor Kent German has put together a list of cell phones to stay away from. He's also given a list of alternatives. Make sure you consult his list before you go phone shopping--I know I will.
