NASA's boss took responsibility today for the alarming loss of a big piece of fuel-tank insulation from Discovery and refused to give up on flying another space shuttle later this year. Podcasts Are Soaring

[Keywords Matched: Internet browser Mozilla Firefox "computer virus"]
Want to listen to your favorite talk radio at your leisure, and not according to a schedule set by some programming director? Apparently, a lot of people do. Search engine requests for Podcasts -- Internet broadcasts, created for downloading on Apple iPod audio players -- have soared 1,052 percent during the last three months, according to Lycos. Blogging turned out to be highly influential last year -- particularly during the political campaigns -- but Podcasting figures to be even more potent this year, experts told UPI.

Feds Eye New Mission: Zombie Hunting

[Keywords Matched: Internet browser Mozilla Firefox "computer virus"]
The federal government is now in the zombie-hunting business -- and is deputizing virtually every Internet Service Provider in the United States as it seeks to halt the flow of unwanted spam e-mail in this country and overseas. The Federal Trade Commission, the federal anti-trust watchdog, is planning in coming weeks to begin sending ISPs reports on the computers on their networks that are zombies. Once the ISPs receive the information, it is then their duty to disable the zombies, which are primarily home PCs that have been hijacked by hackers to illicitly send out spam.

[Keywords Matched: Linux Apple Windows Microsoft Java "Open source"]
On Windows, an open-source component is likely to come with an installer that just works. That's a huge advantage. The game of software development is dominated by the evaluation of available components and the selection of those that best meet needs. To play well, you must be able to evaluate and select as easily and quickly as you can.

Five addictive open source games
http://entertainment.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/07/25/1436216&from=rss

You can use open source software to make yourself more productive, but
the open source community has also produced some impressive game
titles, such as Freeciv, Vega Strike, and Flight Simulator. I've found
some lesser-known yet excellent and quite addictive games for you to
try. All of these games have low system requirements and run on
multiple platforms, including Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

jMemorize -- learning made easy
http://business.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/07/18/1829255&from=rss

The flash card is one of the simplest learning aids ever invented. In
fact, it's so simple that it's hard to imagine how it can be improved
upon, given that it is just a piece of paper with a question on one
side and the answer on the other. In the 1970s, German psychologist
Sebastian Leitner proposed a selective learning system, the purpose of
which was to make learning using flash cards more efficient and less
time-consuming than the traditional method. Leitner's system divides
flash cards into groups, and how often you review the cards in a group
depends on the group's level of difficulty. This method works not only
with conventional paper flash cards, but also with computerized flash
cards such as jMemorize.

A PBX for everyone with Asterisk@Home
http://software.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/07/12/1838245&from=rss

Asterisk, the open source private branch exchange (PBX) from Digium,
has the power to change the telecommunications industry in much the
same way that Linux is changing the operating systems market, but it
needed work to simplify installation and configuration. The recent
release of Asterisk@Home, a Linux distribution dedicated to making
Asterisk easy to install and configure, is a big help.
