TODAY'S WORD: hot backup

A hot backup, also called a dynamic backup, is a backup performed on
data even though it is actively accessible to users and may currently
be in a state of being updated. Hot backups can provide a convenient
solution in multi-user systems, because they do not require downtime,
as does a conventional cold backup.

Hot backups involve certain risks. If the data is altered while the
backup is in progress, the resulting copy may not match the final
state of the data. If recovery of the data becomes necessary (for
example, following a system crash), the inconsistency must be
resolved. The Oracle database preserves the integrity of the data by
creating a so-called redo log prior to executing a hot backup and by
placing the system in a special hot-backup mode while the data is
copied. Performance may be degraded as the backup is taking place.
Individual users may notice this as a temporary system or network
slowdown.

Can the Future of TV Be Seen on the Web?

[Keywords Matched: Internet browser Mozilla Firefox "computer virus"]
CBS News sat on the sidelines during the cable TV revolution, allowing rivals led by CNN, Fox and NBC to dominate the world of 24-hour news. But determined not to make that mistake twice, CBS plans to launch a 24-hour, Internet-based video news service that will let visitors pick reports they want to watch. "Internet news is in its infancy," CBS News president Andrew Heyward says. "We're making the bet that the most desirable [to advertisers] news consumers [are those who] want to take it into their own hands."

PBS, BBC Move Forward with Internet-TV Projects

Two of the world's most important public broadcasters have seen the future of TV -- and it is on the broadband Internet. The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) have disclosed plans to launch Internet-only programming, starting this September. The PBS Internet TV show, dubbed "NerdTV," is touted as the "funniest" show on TV with the "nerdiest people in high-tech." BBC is going to offer feature films over the Internet -- as well as one-week old broadcasts of its news and public affairs programming.

Talk Radio Starts Chat by Tapping Into Blogs

[Keywords Matched: Internet browser Mozilla Firefox "computer virus"]
With its long reliance on talk formats and call-in programs, radio was arguably the first open-source media form. Now a new Public Radio International program, "Open Source from PRI," will test whether the collective intelligence permeating the Web can make not just loud radio, but smart radio. Not only does the program pull from unfiltered voices and opinions found on blogs, Open Source uses its own blog for ideas and sources from its listeners.

Five addictive open source games

You can use open source software to make yourself more productive, but
the open source community has also produced some impressive game
titles, such as Freeciv, Vega Strike, and Flight Simulator. I've found
some lesser-known yet excellent and quite addictive games for you to

multiple platforms, including Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

jMemorize -- learning made easy
http://business.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/07/18/1829255&from=rss

The flash card is one of the simplest learning aids ever invented. In
fact, it's so simple that it's hard to imagine how it can be improved
upon, given that it is just a piece of paper with a question on one
side and the answer on the other. In the 1970s, German psychologist
Sebastian Leitner proposed a selective learning system, the purpose of
which was to make learning using flash cards more efficient and less
time-consuming than the traditional method. Leitner's system divides
flash cards into groups, and how often you review the cards in a group
depends on the group's level of difficulty. This method works not only
with conventional paper flash cards, but also with computerized flash
cards such as jMemorize.

An Unholy Alliance?
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/07/30/1214244&from=rss

I have a confession to make. Sometimes, when I'm trying out an
unfamiliar open-source Security, strength, a lower TCO: find out about
all the advantages of IBM Middleware on Linux. Latest News about open
source component, I cheat. Even if the software I'm working on will
deploy to Linux, I'll sometimes develop it on Windows first. Why?
Because on Windows, an open-source component is likely to come with an
installer that just works. That's a huge advantage. The game of
software development is dominated by the evaluation of available
components and the selection of those that best meet needs. To play
well, you must be able to evaluate and select as easily and quickly as
you can.

Arcom offers Fedora Linux Pentium M Dev Kit
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/07/29/1559247&from=rss

Jenny McCrae writes "Linux is popular choice for developers creating
high availability communication and server solutions. To accelerate
your Linux development cycle, Arcom has introduced a ready-to-run

Leo Laporte: The PC and open source will outlive Windows
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/07/30/129254&from=rss

Lots of people know Leo Laporte. You might have seen him as one of the
hosts on Tech TV's Screen Savers show, or heard his podcast, which is
the number one or two most downloaded podcast currently, depending on
who you talk to. If so, you know that Leo is the consummate pragmatist.
He's not an open source advocate per se, but a best-of-breed kinda guy.
He's recently gone on record [website, MP3 link] saying that GNU/Linux
is not ready for his mom or the prime time desktop just yet. He's not a
UNIX advocate, although he is enthused about the power of the UNIX-type
way of doing an operating system. He likes Macs, but he is not
anti-Windows and specifically denies that he is a Mac bigot. He is
willing to help people get the most out of Windows, and, for example,
recently talked to a local PC users group about how to make their
Windows more secure (to the extent that's possible).
