Google Prompts Skype to Hustle

Skype said Wednesday that it would make its Web software more widely available and easier to use in the race to draw people away from traditional land-line and mobile networks to Internet-based alternative phone service. The announcement was timed to steal thunder from Google, which said Wednesday that it would start Google Talk, a Web-based messaging and phone service.
