[Osdir-daily] Newbie review of Ubuntu "Hoary Hedgehog"

[IMG: http://distroreviews.com/images/ubuntu.png]I know a lot of you are
thinking, how can a newbie to Linux write a review of a Linux Distro ? Well,
after saying a final adios to MS Windows once and for all, the jump into Linux
almost felt like I was way over my head, and sinking fast. Ubuntu threw me a
lifepreserver.

Let me preface all of this by saying that I have loaded several different
distros of Linux on my Compaq Evo N1015v laptop. I have tried SUSE 9.2, 9.3,
Linspire 5.0, PCLinuxOS, etc, etc, and then Ubuntu 5.0.

Here is what I have learned.

As Threats Loom, Online Audio Book Leader Keeps Building

[Keywords Matched: Internet browser Mozilla Firefox "computer virus"]
Mary Lou Kalbow started listening to books while driving a five-hour rural postal route in Minnesota about five years ago. Now she downloads titles by Janet Evanovich, Jonathan Kellerman and James Patterson to her portable MP3 player and listens all day while she works as a massage therapist. "I like to be entertained. Mystery, action, a love story. Something that keeps me on the edge of my seat," said Kalbow, 52. Kalbow is one of the thousands of devotees of Audible, a pioneer in the listenable literature business that remains the Internet's top provider of audio books.

Java Turns Ten as Sun Ushers in New Platforms

[Keywords Matched: Internet browser Mozilla Firefox "computer virus"]
Following Sun Microsystems' recent launch of the GlassFish project, the company used its annual JavaOne developer conference as a platform to usher in the project, which lets developers see the application server source code. As anticipated, Sun announced it is releasing code for the Java System Server Platform Edition 9.0 and Java System Enterprise Server Bus (Java ESB) under the same license used for Sun's OpenSolaris project, announced at last year's conference.

The Apple Store's Super Style

[Keywords Matched: Intel IBM Dell]
Like Apple's products themselves, CEO Steve Jobs was convinced that Apple Stores could reflect a more design-conscious retail ideal, as seen with the company's trademark iMac, and most recently, the buzz-worthy iPod. The subsequent mission of these boutique stores has gone on to merchandise gear to a niche-driven customer base, while also reaching out to reluctant Mac enthusiasts (i.e., Microsoft users).

1. Weekend Feature: Legal Experts Weigh In on Domain Arbitration
------------------------------------------------------------

It has kept domain disputes involving huge companies and small
profiteers known as "cybersquatters," as well as other Internet address
disputes, out of court, but is the domain arbitration that is mandatory
for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) domain
registrants fair?

2. Editor's Pick: How to Unblock Your E-Mail
------------------------------------------------------------

Just as there are precautions that you can take to retain access to e-

access. Some ISPs in the U.S. block all e-mail from IP addresses known
to be responsible for spam or other forms of Internet abuse.

4. Consumer Highlight: What Do Businesses Do With Your Personal Data?
------------------------------------------------------------

Some 72 percent of the businesses evaluated by a Boston-based research
firm scored poorly on their policies for re-using their customers'
personal data for marketing purposes, but the researchers maintain that
more companies are sensitive to privacy issues than ever before and are
acting on that awareness.

5. Hot Topic: Court Okays Use of Trademarks in Google Searches
------------------------------------------------------------

From the perspective of everyday Internet users, the Court was
essentially asked to strike a balance between the legitimate concerns of
trademark holders with potential confusion resulting from use of
trademarks by third parties, against the public's ability to use the
trademarks to search for items logically related to the trademarks.

Legal Experts Weigh In on Domain Arbitration

[Keywords Matched: Internet browser Mozilla Firefox "computer virus"]
It has kept domain disputes involving huge companies and small profiteers known as "cybersquatters," as well as other Internet address disputes, out of court, but is the domain arbitration that is mandatory for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) domain registrants fair? Legal observers indicated the simple process, whereby domain registrants file demands with a chance for opposing parties to respond, helps head off full-blown litigation.

Linux thrives in left-leaning Kerala
http://software.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/08/19/1912207&from=rss

Kerala, a tiny coastal state in south India, is a site of significant
popularity of free software and GNU/Linux. What lessons can Kerala
teach other areas about using free and open source software?

Review: VidaLinux 1.2
http://os.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/08/19/1552242&from=rss

Version 1.2 is the third official release of the Gentoo-based VidaLinux
OS (VLOS). The changes and enhancements to this edition are
significant, but not good enough to save this conceptually astute
operating system from failure. VidaLinux 1.2 is nice to play with, but
don't expect a comfortable, complete desktop experience a la SUSE or
Mandriva.

An open source ghost story
http://software.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/08/18/1557202&from=rss

This story began as a review of g4l, a Norton Ghost-type utility for
Linux. But that's not how it ended up. Instead it's a story of two open
source ghosts: g4u and g4l. As ghost stories go, this one is more sad
than scary: the tale of a bastard son refusing to recognize his
lineage, and of the resulting bad feelings on both sides of the
dispute. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning.

What Is the X Window System
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/08/26/2239251&from=rss

The X Window System (commonly referred to as X or X11) is a
network-transparent graphical windowing system based on a client/server
model. Primarily used on Unix and Unix-like systems such as Linux,
versions of X are also available for many other operating systems.
Although it was developed in 1984, X is not only still viable but also
is in fact the standard environment for Unix windowing systems.

I'm working on most of the newer ioslaves in KDE, namely : system:/,
